Raise your hand if you get so excited to decorate your entry way for fall that you buy a real mum and pretend that it isn’t going to die a few days later! Both of my hands are raised. That is me every fall. No more, kids. No more. I’m showing you a DIY Easy & Realistic Faux Fall Mum Arrangement for Your Porch that will last forever. When you say the word forever, say it like squints does in The Sandlot. That’s how long it will last you. And it doesn’t take much to make. Let’s get started!
Why You Need a Faux Mum Arrangement
This DIY easy faux fall mum arrangement is easy to create, saves you money, and will last you for many seasons to come. Every fall you can place your arrangement in your planter of choice and know that it will remain bright and lush and vibrant all season long. If this doesn’t convince you, allow this photo to demonstrate:
These faux stems have the vertical and packed look that a real mum gives you. You could never tell that they are fake when you walk up to them. They’re vibrant and pretty and offer that cozy welcome you want on your door step.
What You’ll Need
To create a faux stem arrangement for your front door, you will need
- Faux mum bush stem
- Floral foam block
- Outdoor planter (This one looks like real stone and can blend with any outdoor space)
- Sharp knife or small hand saw, to shape/cut down foam
Gather Your Materials & Arrange Floral Stems
Disclaimer here: My materials came from my local craft store, but I’m linking everything (quality approved by me, of course) from Amazon so you have one convenient place to purchase all your materials.
Once you have your materials, take your floral stems and bunch them together so you have an idea of how you want the arrangement to come together. Don’t be afraid to bend branches, pull stems apart and intertwine separate stems. This is how you are going to achieve a natural floral look.
Inserting Stems Into the Foam
This part requires some muscle and some patience. Firmly insert each stem into the foam right up to the base of the stems themselves (depending on how deep your planter is you might change how deep the stem goes into the foam). Inspect the look of each stem before you add another. This ensures you are keeping the look of the arrangement you created beforehand. It also will help you decide if you need to insert a stem at an angle or a certain space apart, etc. Don’t be afraid to make multiple holes and reposition if you need to. Nobody will see the foam.
Cut Foam Down to Size
Once your stems are placed into the foam, place your arrangement in your planter and see how it looks. When I did that I realized that there was a considerable amount of foam showing at the top of the planter so I took a small hand saw and cut about a third of the block off. I placed the arrangement back in the planter and it was perfect. Repeat this step until your arrangement is level and no foam can be seen from the top of the planter.
You want to see stems below the leaves, just like you would see on a real mum.
Create Your Space
Arrange your new faux mum display by your front door for some major Pinterest-worthy fall vibes. Add some pumpkins and some cozy patio accessories like a chair and a blanket and you have a fall display that will last for seasons to come.
Have you tried this yet? How did it turn out? Happy fall!
